Golf is one of the few ball games that does not use a standardized playing area. The game is played on golf "courses". Each golf course has a unique design and typically consists of either 9 or 18 holes.

Golf is defined this way in the Rules of Golf. "Playing a ball with a club from the teeing ground into the hole by a stroke or successive strokes in accordance with the Rules"

The first game of golf in which records survive was played at Bruntsfield Links, in Edinburgh, Scotland, in A.D. 1456, recorded in the archives of the Edinburgh Burgess Golfing Society, now The Royal Burgess Golfing Society.

The modern game of golf spread from Scotland to England. It has now become a worldwide game. There are golf courses in the majority of affluent countries.

Golf competition may be played as stroke play, in which the individual with the lowest number of strokes is declared the winner. Or as match play with the winner determined by whichever individual or team posts the lower score on the most individual holes during a complete round.

Men and women can be seen everyday on golf courses around the world. Players walk or drive in motorized carts over the course. Singly or in groups of two, three, or four, sometimes accompanied by caddies who carry and manage the players' equipment.

Think of great resorts around the world and South Carolina probably does not come to mind. While this was the correct perception years ago, today it is not. Spend a few nights at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort and you will know through and through why South Carolina is becoming a great destination.

Walking into the grand lobby of the resort is to step back to a time of elegance, beauty and traditional Southern Charm. From silken chairs to marble facades to a giant fireplace, the entire atmosphere is one that remains you of a grander time and place.

Only, the resort itself is not a mansion. In fact, if you were to look at an aerial view of the entire property you may find yourself confused as you compare it to inside photographs. Resembling modern townhouses, the many additions to the hotel do not scream old world class at all.

This odd twist of tastes actually works seamlessly even though it sounds as though it would not. This is probably a function of the fact it was build in 2004, a time during which special attention was paid to meshing the positive aspects of many styles. Of course, the inside of the resort is the real attraction.

What more could you want than a beautiful golf course on the ocean? A top notch spa, of course and the resort definitely has one. From the wraps to the massages to the skin treatments and so on, the menu is long and luxurious.

After that spa day you may want to relax with a nice glass of wine and some gourmet food, which can easily be done at any one of the resort's restaurants. French, Southern, or Seafood, foodies will enjoy even last bite that these fine establishments have to offer.

There is no doubt that you will feel elevated, alive, and rejuvenated once your vacation is through, though you may not get a large helping of that southern flavor from this hotel. Those that solely focus upon spa and golf offerings will be thrilled at the location and selection, which is why most people travel to this spot.

Relax on the beach, unwind at the spa, and enjoy the time that you have at the Sanctuary. The world around you may begin to melt away as you bask in that southern sunshine, but that is alright. You are on vacation. Standard rooms at the Sanctuary begin at $400 USD per night.
