Golf Balls
Golf Ball History
Golf balls started out using wood and this changed about the 17th century. A feathery ball was designed which added that changed the game making an exciting new feature to the game. The new ball was a hand sewn leather pouch filled with goose feathers then painted. The feathers were boiled in the cowhide bag. When the ball cooled the feathers would expand and the cowhide would shrink. This would make a very compact ball giving it good flight characteristics. It was a standard used for two centuries but they were costly because not many could be made in a day.
Around 1848 the gutta-percha ball was invented. The sap of a sapodilla tree was used allowing a very round ball by heating and shaping when hot. These balls were nick named gutties and were a lot cheaper to produce. It did not take long to replace the feather balls.
It was not until the 20th century that golf got the first multi-layered balls. They consisted of a solid or liquid filled core that was covered with a thin rubber thread wound around and then covered with a thin shell.
The golf balls we use today have a titanium compounds and other hybrid materials with a softer shell and a core that is pressurized. Today they can be made to suit the playing characteristics of the golfer’s abilities.
