What could be so hard about golf? You hit a ball into a hole; it looks so easy on television. But what professional make look effortless often seems impossible for beginners.

When you first start your kids out, you want to take them somewhere to get their junior golf clubs that sells all types of junior golf equipment. To accurately determine what grip size fits your hands, measure from your wrist (base of hand) to the end of your longest finger. If the result is less than 6.5 inches you should use a small grip. Use a .560" if the distance is 6.5 to 7.0 inches, .560" if 7.0 to 7.5 inches, and .580" if 7.5 to 8.0 inches. For anything over 8.0 inches, select a jumbo grip.

Whether it is a used set of golf clubs that you just picked up at a garage sale or a set that you purchased brand new and have been playing for years, re-gripping your golf clubs is a terrific idea. After all, your grip is the only direct contact that you physically have with your golf clubs. Just a very minor twisting of the grip will be magnified many times over in the inaccuracy of the shot result.

If you play many times a week you should re-grip your golf clubs more frequently than if you play twice a month. The re-gripping of your golf clubs must be done correctly or the problem could actually get worse.

Core Size

Proper re-gripping of your golf clubs requires you to know the core size of the grip that you require and the size of the grip that best fits your hand. Grips come in standard core sizes of; .520", .560", .580", .600", and .620". To determine the core size, simply measure the diameter of the butt of the shaft that you are going to re-grip.

It is critical that the diameter of the shaft match the core diameter of the grip. The next step in the re-gripping process is to determine what size grip best fits your hands. Grips come in a variety of sizes; small, medium, large, and jumbo.

Grip Sizing Your Golf Clubs

To accurately determine what grip size fits your hands, measure from your wrist (base of hand) to the end of your longest finger. If the result is less than 6.5 inches you should use a small grip. Materials Required to Re-Grip Your Golf Clubs

You will need grip solvent, two sided, two inch wide grip tape, a container to catch the unused solvent in, a vise and a special rubber shaft holder. Many of the golf club re-gripping experts use Coleman camp fuel because they claim no residue is left over and it does a great job. These same experts caution against using WD40 because it leaves an oily residue and as a result the grips could come loose.

Re-Gripping Steps

Put the shaft holder over your club shaft and tighten the vise. Cut a piece of tape 8.0 inches long. Place it along the butt of the shaft leaving a half-inch over the end of the shaft. Wrap the tape around the shaft and push it slightly into the shaft to seal the end of the club. Squeeze solvent along the tape, fill the grip about three quarters full of solvent, put your finger over the hole in the end of the grip and then squeeze the grip opening closed.

Now shake the grip so that solvent covers the entire inside and pour the solvent along the tape. Push the grip up and over the shaft butt then hold the grip by the front and back and push applying equal pressure with both hands. Clean up any excess solvent from the grip and let it set for an hour. Good Luck re-gripping your golf clubs!

Learn Keys to Efficient Golf Practice for Beginners

Whether it's baseball, hockey, soccer, tennis or any other sports that involves a ball, there is a feeling of immense satisfaction and pride that comes from hitting the ball solidly. Nowhere does this apply more than in golf, where the small ball goes where it wants on anything but a solid shot.

If you want to hit the ball solidly on a consistent basis, the only way is through practice and more practice.

Though you may not think so, the best time to practice is right after a round. Everything that didn't work for you during the round is fresh in your mind, and your body and mind are ready to go. Failure to work consistently on the shots that regularly give you the most trouble means your game won't soon improve.

The key to maximizing your efficiency in practice is creating 'real' situations. Ideally, you would mirror what happened in your round and employ your best swings. Also work on hitting balls from every bad lie you can think of. Obviously, it's extra important to practice if you haven't played for a while.

You can boost your game further by visualizing a round of golf during lunch or breaks, on your way to or home from work, etc. Imagine taking many good swings and hitting a great shot each time. See your entire body flowing in unison through each shot, completely tension-free. This isn't useless preparation. You are increasing your muscle memory and preparing them for the next round.

If you enjoy other sports, you can transfer movements in these sports to help your golf game. For instance, the way you shift your weight on a tennis backhand shot is very similar to the bodyweight transfer on a golf shot. Use the tennis experience to remember what you need to do on the links. When you're hitting a lot of balls in one session, remember to take a break between swings. By doing this, you will avoid mental and physical exhaustion and can use the time to process what you've learned or accomplished. Remember, you're not out there to hit a thousand shots, rather a few beautiful ones. Hitting 20-30 balls at a time is sufficient practice, especially if the majority of these are struck on the sweet spot of the clubface.

To hit a more accurate shot and promote better contact, pull out your favorite iron and try this exercise. Take two tees and stick them in the ground a couple of inches apart. (You can also use two balls.) Try (air)swinging your iron through the tees without hitting them. Start with partial swings and work your way up to full swings as you get better at avoiding the tees. Before long you will be hitting the ball more solidly.

It may sound corny, but don't forget the feeling of a good shot. Memorize it and internalize it, then practice it and you will soon be able to produce it consistently. It's very easy to lose the feeling of a great shot because there are so many variables that went into hit, from proper grip, hand position, and good pre-swing body alignment to the right ball position, clubface impact and follow-through.

Golf Training All Year Long

How would you like to be in your best golfing form and hit the ground running when next golf season rolls around? You have a great opportunity to make yourself a better golf in the cold months with golf training aids.

But you don't have to be one of those golfers. There are too many good training aids available, you could make your basement into a driving range. Of course you won't be hitting real golf balls, unless you have a good net.

Some golfers who've used training aids have picked precise swing keys to train for the winter months. Others have just picked up a golf training club to swing to remain limber and keep those golfing muscles stretched out. Whatever the reason, better to keep the oil running.

Are you inactive far too often? Grab that putter and a number of golf balls and start grooving that smooth stroke. The key to lower scores is the ability to putt well.

Could your chipping game use a little work? Whose couldn't? I have a chipping and putting practice area set up inside my garage. My garage and a good space heater, you'd think you were in Florida. My golf game has really improved since I built my garage 'course'.

Think about this, after your playing partners see you putt and chip for lower scores, you just might have to find some new partners. They might even start asking you for playing advice.

Do you ever thing about retooling your swing from the ground up? How about picking up some advice from the games best instructors through a DVD? Most of the games best produced a few champions, I'm sure they can help you.

And don't forget feeling comfortable at address. I know someone who won his club championship after getting a brand spanking new set of golf clubs. When I asked him why he switched, he told me he just couldn't feel comfortable at address with his old set. They didn't look right.

Improve Your Golf Game With These Simple Golf Tips

After playing tons of rounds with so many people, I noticed what the good golfers do that others don't.

Buying equipment seems to be the most popular because it's probably the easiest and the laziest method. New equipment is nice, but it's expensive and it may not be the most effective!

Committed people start looking into lessons. They are great, but takes a lot of time and effort. They need to practice, practice and practice.

Did you know that the pros can take your long game, combine it with their short game and still shoot in the 80s? Everyone knows that the short game is where it's at but if you are one of those people that practice, you better be really committed because it is going to take a LONG time.

All these are good but there's actually something even easier. Check these tips out for a guaranteed few strokes off!

1. Glove - Changing your gloves as much as you can afford to is essential for a good game. Once it starts slipping, then bye bye good ball striking.

2. Spikes - This is so easy to do but once you change it, you won't be slipping all over the place. It's hard enough to play the game but if you are not balanced, it's just frustrating.

3. Tees - When I hit my tee shots, I want the ball to hit the sweet spot of the club face every time. Having the same tee height is the only way I can do this (apart from having a repeatable swing).

4. Hydration - I never used to drink and would only play a good few holes before I tail off. Now I drink 2-3 bottles of water a round and I play great all 18 holes!

5. Warm up - I still don't spend enough time on warm up but I noticed that sometimes it takes me 1-2 holes just to get relaxed and able to swing freely. This is all due to not having enough warm up. Warming up also helps relaxes your mind and enables you to make adjustments to compensate for the way balls are flying. More importantly, warming up reduces injuries! 1-3 strokes saved

6. Eat Light - Heavy eating is a no-no on the course. You end up losing focus after a big meal so it's hard to pick and execute the right shots. Eating something light is great for your score.

Remember the theme song from the Rocky movie, "The Eye of the Tiger"?

When Rocky fought his opponent he had the focus of 'the eye of the tiger'. When that song was written they couldn't have had any idea the significance it would take on when a new Tiger took the world stage and changed sports forever.

I don't care if you are a golf fan or a sports fan or if you think there is too much hype over this one particular athlete-yes golfers are athletes.

Tiger Woods is a force to be reckoned with. I could write a book about not only his accomplishments in the sports world, but also his accomplishments as a human being, but many books have already been written. In fact I wrote about Tiger in my book, "Breakthrough to Success."

Look at what Tiger does in terms of how you live your life. Could you stand up to the level of excellence that Tiger requires of himself? If you raised your expectations, do you think you would be performing head and shoulders above your competition?

I've always been a huge fan of his because not only is he a consummate professional, he has such intense focus that you can see it on his face when you watch him on TV. I have also had the pleasure of standing just a few feet from him on more than one occasion and watching that focus in person.

Over and over again I heard the announcers at the tournament talking about how nobody would believe this if it was a movie. It would just be too much of a fantasy and the whoever wrote a screenplay that played out like this would be laughed out of a movie mogul's office. I don't know if I've ever seen a movie or a sporting event with this many interesting characters and twists and turns.

Tiger is larger than life and his life is richer, more nuanced, and more interesting than any movie script. And this weekend he was Rocky, but he wasn't fighting an opponent, he was doing what his dad had taught him. He was playing full out because that's the only way to do it.

There were so many amazing shots from this one tournament. You can probably find them all on Youtube. But it's not about the shots. It's about the measure of the man. During the tournament some of his fellow golfers, who should feel really ashamed of themselves right now, wondered out loud through their pettiness and jealousy how hurt Tiger really was.

Tiger on the other hand downplayed his injury to not take the focus off the Open while he played through incredible pain that would have made almost any other player call it quits, especially when he was so far back that it didn't look like he had any chance at all of winning.

And yet, Tiger not only didn't quit, he forced a playoff and played another 19 holes on Monday. And then he made the impossible inevitable by winning...again!

Watching him play in the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines for 4 days instead of the usual 3 was a treat and at the same time painful. My heart ached every time I saw him wince when he hit the ball or when his caddy pulled him up by the arm when he couldn't get up by himself or when the pain of taking another stroke had him almost doubled over in pain.

And I wondered how he could keep going, where did he find the inner strength to focus enough to pull it out day after day?

Ironically during the tournament there was a commercial running with audio of his dad talking about how Tiger would never meet anyone else as mentally tough as him in his entire life.

He certainly proved his dad right that weekend. I'm sorry I won't be seeing him play the rest of the summer, but I know he'll be back next year better than ever because striving for excellence is just his natural way of being.

It makes sense that we all want to know how to drive long off the tee. After all, more distance gives us shorter and easier approach shots to the green. Most of the golf swing instruction e-books offer to teach us how to add more distance. Most of them promise an extra few yards or so.

These guide books, though, are aimed at the beginner or recreational golfer. They teach you everything about the golf swing; from the grip and setup, to the backswing and follow through. But if you are a more accomplished golfer that is looking for more detailed information about how to drive long, you will need to go to the distance golf experts.

The Long Drivers of America

You could start by visiting the Long Drivers of America website. They are the official golf association for the Remax Long Drive Championship. These power golf swing fanatics are all about achieving maximum golf distance. If you are attracted by the idea of participating in the Re/Max World Long Drive Championship, then visit the Long Drivers of America site.

Mike Austin And The Worlds Longest Drive

Unbelievably, the Worlds longest golf drive has not been broken since 1974. Golfing legend, Mike Austin, holds the Guinness World Record for longest drive in a tournament. His record breaking 515-yard drive was accomplished at the 1974 U.S. National Senior Open in Las Vegas - at the age of 64!

That was using a 43.5 inch steel-shafted, wood-headed driver! So obviously, the golf equipment doesn't have that much to do with how far you can drive the ball. Though, today's long drive champions use 2X or 3X, extra stiff shafts that are up to 50 inches, and driver lofts that are as low as 5 or 6 degrees.

How To Drive Long Off The Tee

For most of us weekend warriors, we just want to know how to drive long and to improve our golf game in general. You may have a good grip and swing technique, but it doesn't necessarily mean that you will have a good golf distance off the tee. Your golf club head speed is the major factor that you need to improve on. For every 1 mph of increased golf swing speed means a increase of about 2.5 yards of distance. Basically, if you increase your swing speed you'll increase your distance.

Of course, there are other factors involved if you want to learn how to drive long. Golf fitness training and flexibility go along way to improving, not just your distance, but your overall golf game. Another area of your game that you should work on is the mental game of golf. The above areas of golf are generally overlooked by the majority of golfers, but they are vitally important to take your game to a higher level.

A Distance Golf Instructor

So, if you really want to learn how to drive long, you will need a professional golf instructor who knows what is required for distance golf. If you are currently hitting drives of 200 yards, then adding a few yards to your drives won't help you much. You need to find someone that has been where you are and who can now hit 350 to 430 yard drives.

Fantastic golf club sets can be the difference between a good game and a terrible game. The golf club sets you choose has to be designed to suit the way you play the game and your body type. There is not one set of golf clubs that is going to be ideal for everyone.

People can now get golf sets from nearly anywhere. Golf sets can range in price for 170 bucks to thousands. Now to some peoples chagrin golf has absolutely exploded. Early on in the life of golf it was hard to find any retailer but now that has all changed.

Golf is a stress-relieving sport enjoyed by many. What does a game of golf involve? Lots of walking, chasing after a small ball the whole afternoon. Getting the ball into sand traps, water hazards and bunkers,etc. Of course that's what non-golfers would usually say. Us golfers know better.

But don't forget that besides improving your handicap score, your next most important area to take care of are your golf accessories. They are just as important. Without them, you cant really hit anything can you?

Ok, so maybe you'll not the big wig professionals and don't need such a huge and expensive bag. Well for the weekend golfers, may I suggest the golf stand bag. It is small and light and definitely easy to carry around. Plus it usually comes with a stand that allows you to prop up the bag easily. Just don't expect to fit your entire collection of golf clubs into it though. Minimalist is the feature of this bag.

Lastly, we have the golf cart bag. Okay this is like the hybrid between the golf staff bag and golf stand bag. It strikes a balance between space and size. It may be less comfortable to carry around than the stand bag, but if you are more than the average weekend golfer, this bag provides the optimal mix. You can stuff in more golf clubs and still be able to put it in that car boot or plane cargo.

Hybrid irons and their advantages have been gaining popularity amongst most golfers, even some of the well known PGA professionals. The hybrid iron has found its place in many a golfer's set, and has proven its value when compared to regular longer irons.

Compared to the regular longer irons, hybrids are much easier to hit. This is partly due to the center of gravity being further back than on a normal long iron. the result is a slightly better launch angle, adding some more distance to your shot.

A Hybrid iron, as you may have observed, has a longer shaft than a conventional iron. When you combine the extra leverage with a center of gravity moved backwards (to increase the sweet spot), you get more impact, and better use of that impact.

The versatility of hybrid irons, as opposed to normal irons, presents more shot choices. Depending on the scenario, you could use it for long approach shots, or playing from fairway bunkers, and even (should you land in a situation where accurate play is needed) use it to tee off.

There is one factor that you must keep in mind, though. Due to the extra distance afforded by the hybrid iron, you will probably end up with what you could call a "distance gap". Depending on the composition of the set, and the capabilities of each iron, you will lack the club for a particular distance range. You will have to carry an extra iron somewhere in the kit, or you could switch to using a set compiled from hybrids. The latter should have a positive impact on your game - not just certain shots.

The more difficult way out would be to decide on a compromise course by course. Take a look at the layout, the obstacles it presents, and the length. Judging by the situations you expect, decide which club has to be dropped in favor of another. The expected conditions would, for instance, have you make a choice between having a five iron, and taking an extra wedge.

Thanks to technological advances, hybrid irons have gained a fair advantage over regular irons. Originally these clubs were designed to assist the "average" golfer, but as time passes, more and more professional hybrid irons are released. This has resulted in growing popularity amongst the more experienced golfers, including the hardened PGA professionals, who are seen (regularly) carrying hybrids on the field. There is a definite swing in popularity towards hybrids.

Planning a Las Vegas golf vacation? With just a little pre-planning, you can have that vacation, worry free. A few details handled before you leave can make a world of difference. You'll have the time of your life, and only have to worry about your score.

First things first. Take a good hard look before selecting a golf package or a discount golf vacation. An abundance of courses means there's plenty of places to play in Vegas, but they're not all the same. Extra time spent reading reviews online, and making sure the place you're staying or playing is reputable will be well worth your while.

If you are traveling on a budget make sure that you leave some wiggle room in your wallet. There is perhaps no easier place in the world to spend your money at the expense of a good time. It may be worth it to select a more basic golf package if it means not having to depend on a slot machine to get enough cash to get back home.

Some costs to consider might not be apparent at first glance. Standard expenses generally include caddies, gratuities, groceries, parking, and transportation to courses not on the resort. Make sure you budget some extra money for any expenses that might pop up.

Any golf outing requires packing a large amount of accessories, and many are only remembered after it is too late. Before you head to the airport make sure to pack things such as sunscreen, a hat, chap-stick, band aids, sunglasses, and pain relievers. Leaving commonplace items such as these at home can have a big impact on your enjoyment of a round of golf.

Air travel today is notoriously difficult, and traveling with your golf clubs makes it that much tougher. This is especially true because airline baggage policies for golf clubs vary from airline to airline. Check online with your specific airline or airlines to make sure that you donat have to leave any equipment at the baggage check-in.

Finally, when you arrive in Vegas and check in at your hotel or resort make sure to check if the hotel is offering any upgrades. Sometimes all it takes to get a better room or a better deal is just to ask. Check online reviews at your resort for any upgrades that travelers before you were able to get.

Whether you're traveling by yourself or with friends, it's hard to go wrong with a golf package deal. But if you remember just a few basic things, there's much less chance a little detail will make your trip a bad memory. Like many things in life, when it comes to golf in Vegas it pays to plan.
